Halloween Now a Big Holiday

Yesterday I heard that Halloween is now in the top holidays in the country. That got me to thinking why it has moved up in importance.

First there is candy. I am a chocoholic. It takes will-power to limit the chocolate. I also like Candy Corn. Halloween is a great time of year for me just for the sweets.

Second, it is a chance to dress up as another character. For a short time we get to escape the boundaries of our characters and be someone else. That is fun!

Third, we get to put out decorations. It has been months since some of us put up anything for a holiday or special event. This again is fun.

Fourth, the scary parts are all in fun. We know that they are not really going to hurt us. Since they are just to look scary, we enjoy them. Especially in these economic times, that is nice.

Fifth, we like to think that those that have died and we were close to do come back but to help us. Remember Halloween is really “Hallowed Evening”. It is the evening before All Saints Day when we remember the saints that have gone before us. It gives us encouragement. We need that feeling during these times.

Yes, I guess it is only natural that Halloween has become an important holiday time. Let’s enjoy it.

Funny you mention this, Nancy, because I've spent much time on Hallween, already, and we're not even at it, yet.

I bought all my Halloween cards. I bought special candles for my Halloween candle holder. And, I've spent much time planning what Halloween desserts to make. I keep plastic spiders to topic cakes with frosting webs on them. Years ago, one of my customers pointed me toward bloddy finger cookies that I like to bake, too:
