The office desktop is now 5 years old. I am comfortable with it. I know how it works. However, it is time to replace it.
For the past few weeks I have been researching the detail components and deciding what I really need. For example, this machine has a slot for a 3.5 disk. Remember those? I cannot remember the last time I used one. I have even found some on the shelf below the computer. They are great dust catchers.
This one has 2 DVD drives. I only need one. I use USB ports now. I will confess to playing some of the Harry Potter games on that first movie DVD.
I remember my first personal computer. It was an Apple II plus. I bought one disk drive. Then went back and bought another one and added it on.
Now my main concerns revolve around participating in online meetings. I want to make sure about the webcam, microphone and speakers.
I ordered the new one this morning. Part of it will be here in a week. The other part can take 2 weeks. That will give me time to clean the study and get ready. I am also using some pieces that I already have such as surge protectors. I can be tight with a buck.
I like having access and options. Therefore I have already determined how this one can be set up in the guest room. I will not have Internet access but I will be able to access and print files if I absolutely have to. I see no reason to bring all of these files over. I have not accessed most of them in over 1 year. Besides I have them backed up by an online backup service. If I need them I should have the option of accessing them via the Internet. If that fails, I can copy them from the old machine to a USB and load them.
Now I have to get ready and get some other tasks out of the way.
