I attended an NCTA meeting last Thursday that discussed technology and the healthcare industry. As I listened to the panel, I kept hearing all of the info that is going to be recorded and maintained on individuals. I realized that I have the best world for this since I already select and maintain my health insurance. Let me explain.
I grew up in a one-company town. I question giving an employer too much information. I have heard how this can be misused.
One panelist kept discussing all of the data that can be maintained through benefit programs. He kept stressing recording trips to the gym, what one eats, and so on. I kept wondering what employee is going to provide the info or try to hide some info.
Another panelist started talking about the concerns about data when someone switches from one healthcare provider to another. There are privacy laws about this.
Maybe it is time for employers to get out of the health insurance business. I understand that this benefit began during World War II when they could not raise salaries. Maybe we need to go back to just pay the employee and let them go get it. Let these matters be between the individual, the medical people and the insurance company.
Being self-employed, I have the arrangement of me, the insurance company and the medical people. I like that better. I do not want some company knowing all of this info. Now if we can just get it so that if one changes states, the insurance can go too.
